Suborder

Eupnoi

Superfamily

Caddoidea

Caddidae is a family of Opiliones with 1 genus and 2 extant species, the only family of the Eupnoi superfamily Caddoidea. It has been recently dismantled with the transfer of the Acropsopilioninae to the Dyspnoi[1].

The two species of Caddo are among the rare non-introduced Opiliones that occur in different continents, being reported from Canada and USA as well as from Japan, Korea and Russia.

The remarkable similarity between Caddo and Acropsopilio led to their inclusion in the same family for decades, until they were allocated to different suborders.

Placement and composition[]

  • Caddini originally included only Caddo.
  • The tribe was synonymized under Oligolophinae by Roewer (1912; 1923).
  • Goodnight & Goodnight (1948) kept Caddo in Oligolophinae.
  • Roewer (1957: 331) was the first to join Acropsopilio and Caddo, placing the name Acropsopilionidae under the synonymy of a revalidated subfamily Caddoinae under the Phalangiidae.
  • Šilhavý (1961a) kept Acropsopilionidae in Dyspnoi and Caddoinae under Phalangiidae in Eupnoi.
  • Kauri (1961) returned to a previous arrangement, keeping Acropsopilionidae and Caddoinae separated, but suggesting that they should be in a single family separated from Phalangiidae.
  • Shear (1974b) repeated Roewer (1957), only changing terminology, creating the superfamily Caddoidea in the Palpatores, containing only Caddidae (with Acropsopilionidae in its synonymy). Zeopsopilio was put in the synonymy of Acropsopilio.
  • Groh & Giribet (2014) returned to the original scheme, recognizing Caddidae in Eupnoi and Acropsopilionidae in Dyspnoi.

Diagnosis[]

Included genera[]

  • Caddo Banks, 1892 (2 extant, 1 fossil species).
