Crosbycus Roewer, 1914 is a monotypic genus of Taracidae[1].
Its type species Crosbycus dasycnemus (Crosby, 1911) occurs in China [2] and British Columbia (Canada), being one of the rarest intercontinental genera of harvestmen. All other Old World Crosbycus are juvenile Nemastomatidae[3][4]
Etymology[]
Crosbycus in honor to arachnologist Cyrus Richard Crosby (1879–1937). Gender masculine.
Placement[]
Crosbycus originally in Nemastomatidae. When Kratochvíl divided this in subfamilies, he kept Crosbycus in Nemastomatinae [5]. Gruber excluded Crosbycus definitively from Nemastomatidae[6], without precise familial placement (“in Ischyropsalididae?”). Martens suggested, but did not formally describe a monotypic subfamily in Ischyropsalidoidea for Crosbycus[7][8]. Shear transferred Crosbycus to Ceratolasmatidae[9], placing it as sister to Hesperonemastoma. Giribet and collaborators included Hesperonemastoma in the Sabaconidae, but left Crosbycus unassigned to any family[10]. Schönhofer in his catalog [1] described Taracidae composed by Crosbycus, Hesperonemastoma and Taracus.
