Paranemastoma Redikortsev, 1936, with ca. 50 valid species (of which half are nomina dubia: Schönhofer, 2013), is the most diverse genus of Nemastomatidae and comprises the largest species of the family (Martens, 2006). Its species are recognizable by their very robust makeup, quadratic body shape, and black background color with extensive golden-yellow markings on the dorsal scutum. The species of the genus are widespread from the central Alps to the eastern Elburz Mountains and they neither occur west of the Western Alps nor north of the Alps west of the Rhine. They are also missing in Scandinavia and in the northeast European lowland.

Type species[]
Paranemastoma superbum Redikortsev, 1936, by monotypy. (Note, was considered as Junior secondary homonym of Nemastoma superbum L.Koch, 1870 from the later revised combination of Nemastoma (Paranemastoma) superbum (Redikortsev, 1936): e.g. Mkheidze 1959. That lead to proposal of the replacement name: Nemastoma supersum Roewer 1951, but should not be conserved because it is not in prevailing usage (ICZN, Art. 59.3).
